Last week, NLMS students participated in Red Ribbon dress up days and activities that promote the importance of living a drug-free life. Guest Speakers from Under Age, Under Arrest spoke to our 7th and 8th grade students. Peer Helpers and FOCUS members helped decorate our hallways, read a drug-free morning message during morning announcements and passed out Red Ribbon stickers through the week.
NLMS also held a Red Ribbon Poster Contest with the homeroom with the most participation earning a popcorn party. PTO presented the winners from each grade with a Chick-fil-A giftcard!

NLMS seventh graders are beginning a new, challenging unit of study in English with the theme of “Highs and Lows.” To begin, students completed a visual discovery of our upcoming texts. Next, students learned about reading fluency strategies and read the poem “Annabel Lee” aloud to a partner. They answered fluency self-assessment questions and determined which strategies would best improve their fluency and comprehension.
On Friday’s early release day, NLMS students enjoyed a Color Run sponsored by the PTO. Grade levels rotated between the color run, games, and concessions. We would like to say a special thank you to all of the parent and student volunteers and a very special thank you to our PTO president, Dana Morris for organizing this awesome event.

The NLMS Peer Helpers collected donations for Children’s of Al in observance of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. All proceeds will go to purchasing items on the Children’s of AL wish list.
Students in Mrs. Fowler’s 7th Grade Life Science class delved into the fascinating world of anatomy and biology by dissecting chicken wings to explore how our body systems work together, as well as investigate the striking similarities between chicken wings and human arms. The primary objective of this dissection is to investigate the role of muscles and their manipulation in making the chicken wings "flap," shedding light on how the principles observed in the chicken wing dissection can be related to the function of human arms. Without using gravity, students figured out how to make a chicken wing flap. By pulling on the biceps or triceps, the wing of the chicken would shorten or lengthen. Everyone had an “egg-celent” time learning about how our muscular and skeletal systems work together!

The " We Build It Better" students went to Honda on a field trip to participate in Manufacturing Day! The students learned about Honda and manufacturing in general. The students participated in hands-on learning activities, and were given opportunities to talk to some colleges, universities, and programs about how they can get from where they stand today, to a career at Honda! Also, the students were able to tour the Engine Assembly and part of the Frame Assembly area.
On Thursday, October 12th please help NLMS and the Peer Helpers collect donations to support families impacted by childhood cancer. Thank you NLMS PTO for making this fundraiser possible!

Students in Mrs. Fowler’s 7th Grade Life Science class are shown here
working on their life-size digestive system projects. At this point,
students have already researched each of the organs in the digestive
system. Next, students will color, cut and glue their organs in the
correct location. Finally, students will include their research facts
on their poster.
Eighth grade members of FOCUS attended the FOCUS rally last Wednesday at Shock Springs. They listened to the amazing motivational speaker, Layton Hicks, and were involved in learning how to lead and make positive choices through middle school. We are so proud of these students for representing NLMS so well!
